Sugar: The Tasty Weight Gainer
February 12th, 2012Sugar is a poison and is responsible for illnesses including obesity, heart disease, cancer and liver problems.
It also contributes to around 35 million deaths a year worldwide, this shows the full extent of how dangerous sugar is. The article The toxic truth about sugar mentions that: ‘A little sugar is not a problem but a lot kills – slowly’.
Sugar not only makes you fat, but also changes the body’s metabolism, raises blood pressure, throws hormones off balance and harms the liver.
The damage sugar causes mirrors that of alcohol abuse, alcohol is made from distilling sugar.
Growing up as a child I ate so many sweets, I would have mood swings, poor concentration, but due to having a fast metabolism, and being very active as a child I never became overweight.
Unfortunately the society our children live in is not as active; they have playstations, nintendo’s, X box and social networks to occupy their time, which explains why childrens waistlines are expanding at a ridiculous rate.
Also sugar consumption has tripled in the past 50 years, so whilst some scientists are claiming that for sugar to become toxic it needs to be consumed in unrealistic amounts… I would have to say that society today does consume sugar in very high amounts compared to 50 years ago. If you add up all the foods we eat that contain sugar it starts to accumulate i.e Cereals, fizzy drinks and fruit juices, chocolate bars, cereal bars, even processed microwave meals contain sugar.
Scientists are saying the only way to curb this addiction to sugar is through taxation and legislation, I don’t think this is likely to happen, but what I can advise is to use natural sweetners like agave nectar syrup, stevia sugar and xylitol sugar substitute to wean ourselves from refined sugars.
